Why the Kampala "School Run" is a coding lesson.

You’re receiving this because… You’ve engaged with Code Impact—helping us build the next generation of African thinkers.

01 / A Note from the Founder

Last week, during a robotics session, a 9-year-old we'll call "Sam" stopped mid-build and asked me:

“Alex, if AI can already do the hard thinking, why do I still need to learn the small steps?”

It’s a question I haven’t been able to shake. It gets to the heart of what education looks like in Uganda today.

Here is the truth: AI can generate answers, but it cannot exercise judgment. It can write code, but it doesn't know if that code solves a problem for a neighbor in Kampala or a farmer in Gulu.

We aren't just teaching "Sam" to code. We are teaching him to be the Architect who directs the AI, rather than just a passenger.

02 / What We’re Building (May Holiday Program)

We’ve scrapped the old manuals. This May, we are introducing Mission-Based Learning.

  • The Mission: "The Karamoja Challenge."

  • The Goal: Build a robot that can navigate unpredictable terrain using simple AI "eyes" (sensors).

  • The Skill: Moving from “How do I follow instructions?” to “How do I solve this problem?”

Want the full May schedule? Just reply “MAY” and I’ll send it over.

03 / AI, Simply: The "WhatsApp Autofill"

Parents often ask: "Is AI a magic brain?" Not quite. Think of it like the autofill on your phone.

When you type "I am on my..." your phone suggests "way." It doesn't "know" you are in a taxi; it just knows that after those words, "way" usually follows.

AI is just that, but it has "read" the whole internet. When children realize it’s just a pattern-matcher, they stop being afraid of it and start using it as a tool.

04 / Try This at Home (5 mins)

The "Rolex Recipe" Game . Ask your child to "program" you to make a Rolex.

  • The Catch: You are a literal robot.

  • The Result: If they say "Break the egg," you might smash it on the floor.

  • The Lesson: They learn Precision. If they can't give a clear instruction to a human, they can't give one to an AI.

05 / Learner Spotlight: Fixing the School Run

Kampala traffic isn't just annoying; the pollution around school gates is a health risk.

Our Saturday club students built a Smart School Gate prototype. It uses sensors to detect "idling" cars (cars sitting with engines on). After 2 minutes, a signal alerts the driver to turn off the engine.

The Result: Less smoke, smoother traffic, and kids who realize they have the power to fix their city.

06 / The Parent AI Challenge (Win a Prize! )

I want to make AI work for you, not just your child.

The Challenge: Reply to this email with one boring or difficult task you do at work or home (e.g., “I spend 3 hours a week sorting school WhatsApp messages” or “I struggle to write weekly reports”).

  • For 2 Parents: I will personally build/suggest a custom AI tool to solve your problem.

  • For the Winner: A FREE 1:1 Coding & AI session for your child.

Deadline: Sunday at Midnight.

Reply now—what’s your biggest "boring" task?
